During an emergency evacuation, there is not always time to find what you need so your grab bag should be pre-loaded with all your essentials.

  • Important documents (copies and on USB portable drive) Eg. Insurance documents, Identification Documents (ID), bank records, medical records etc.
  • Prescriptions
  • Emergency medical kit
  • Cash in small denominations
  • Prepaid phone card (international)
  • Waterproof matches
  • Whistle (to signal for help)
  • Food (like granola or power bars)
  • Bottled water (not too much)
  • Water sterilization tablets
  • House and car keys ( extra set if possible)

How to shut down your home

Natural Gas

Most gas valves are located outside and require a wrench to be shut off. You should consult your utility company for instructions to how to shut off properly. These instructions should be kept in an emergency drawer together with a flashlight.

Water

During a disaster, cracked exterior water lines can wash contaminated water contaminated water into your house. You should shut off the main water supply to solve this problem.

Electricity In a flood

Live electrical outlets can become a danger to you and to rescue workers. If there is a risk of flooding you should locate the main circuit box and switch off the main breaker. If it already flooding, do not touch the service panel.
